“Settlers Of Jerusalem”

The officers of the people settled in Jerusalem, while the remainder of the people cast lots to bring one tenth [of them] to settle in Jerusalem, the Holy City, with nine parts [remaining] in the [other] cities.

1 And the rulers of the people dwelt in Jerusalem, and the rest of the people cast lots to bring one of ten to dwell in Jerusalem the holy city, and nine parts in [other] cities.
2 And the people blessed all the persons who volunteered to dwell in Jerusalem.
3 And these are the heads of the province who dwelt in Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judea they dwelt each one in his inheritance in their cities: Israelites, the priests, the Levites, the Nethinites, and the children of Solomon’s slaves.
4 And in Jerusalem there dwelt of the children of Judah and of the children of Benjamin; of the children of Judah; Athaiah the son of Uzziah, the son of Zechariah, the son of Amariah, the son of Shephatiah, the son of Mahalalel, of the children of Perez.
5 And Maaseiah the son of Baruch, the son of Kol-Hozeh, the son of Hazaiah, the son of Adaiah, the son of Joiarib, the son of Zechariah, the son of the Shilonite.
6 All the children of Perez who dwelt in Jerusalem were four hundred and sixty-eight valiant men.
7 And these are the children of Benjamin: Sallu the son of Meshullam, the son of Joed, the son of Pedaiah, the son of Kolaiah, the son of Maaseiah, the son of Ithiel, the son of Isaiah.
8 And after him was Gabbai Sallai, [and with him] nine hundred and twenty-eight.
9 And Joel the son of Zichri was the official over them, and Judah the son of Hassenuah was the second in command over the city.
10 Of the priests were Jedaiah the son of Joiarib, [and] Jachin.
11 Seraiah the son of Hilkiah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Zadok, the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub was the official over the Temple of God.
12 And their brethren who performed the work of the Temple were eight hundred and twenty-two, and Adaiah the son of Jeroham, the son of Pelaliah, the son of Amzi, the son of Zechariah, the son of Pashhur, the son of Malkiah.
13 And his brethren, rulers over the fathers’ houses, were two hundred and forty-two, including Amashesai the son of Azarel, the son of Ahzai, the son of Meshillemoth, the son of Immer.
14 And their brethren, valiant men, were a hundred and twenty-eight, and the official over them was Zabdiel the son of the great.
15 And of the Levites: Shemaiah the son of Hashub, the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Bunni.
16 And Shabbethai and Jazabad were over the outside work of the Temple of God, of the heads of the Levites.
17 And Mattaniah the son of Micha, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph was the head to begin the thanksgiving in prayer, and Bakbukiah, the second-in-command of his brethren, and Abda the son of Shammua, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun.
18 All the Levites in the Holy City were two hundred and eighty-four.
19 And the gatekeepers were Akkub, Talmon, and their brethren who guard at the gates; [they] were a hundred and seventy-two.
20 And the rest of Israel, the priests and the Levites were in all the cities of Judea, each one in his inheritance.
21 And the Nethinites were dwelling in the Ophel, and Ziha and Gishpa were over the Nethinites.
22 And the official over the Levites in Jerusalem was Uzzi the son of Bani, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Micha, of the sons of Asaph, the singers over the work of the Temple of God.
23 For the command of the king was upon them and [his] trust was on the singers for the daily requirements.
24 And Pethahiah the son of Meshezabel, of the sons of Zerah, the son of Judah was at the king’s hand for every matter of the people.
25 And as for the villages with their fields, some of the children of Judah dwelt in Kiriath-Arba and its villages, and in Dibon and in its villages, and in Jekabzeel and its villages.
26 And in Jeshua, and in Moladah, and in Beth-Pelet.
27 And in Hazar-Shual, and in Beer-sheba and its villages.
28 And in Ziklag, and in Mechonah and in its villages.
29 And in En-Rimmon, and in Zorah, and in Jannuth.
30 Zanoah, Adullam, and their villages, Lachish and its fields, Azekah and its villages; and they encamped from Beer-sheba until the Valley of Hinnom.
31 And the children of Benjamin were from Geba, Michmas, and Aijah, and Bethel and its villages.
32 Anathoth, Nob, Ananiah.
33 Hazzor, Ramah, Gittaim.
34 Hadid, Zeboim, Neballat.
35 Lod and Ono, the Valley of Harashim.
36 And from the Levites there were divisions to Judah and to Benjamin.

Nehemiah, a cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes. Nehemiah made a request to the king to return to his ancestral land and perform his duties as a leader by rebuilding the city walls which was reportedly damaged.

Despite opposition from the enemies, Nehemiah successfully completes the project with the help of the Jewish community.

Reading of the Torah, rebuilding of the Temple, and reestablishment of the Jewish people’s covenant with G-d are Nehemiah’s notable contributions.
