Judges Chapter 2

THE PROPHETS

JUDGES

Shoftim

Judges chronicles the history of the Israelites during the period between the conquest of the Land of Israel and the establishment of the monarchy. It contains accounts of the heroic deeds of various judges who led and rescued the Israelites from their enemies.

The book also provides valuable insights into the spiritual and moral challenges faced by the Israelites during that time. The cycle of sin is clearly seen in the book of Judges (Shoftim in Hebrew).

Chapter 2

Chapter 2 of Judges Gives the Account of Forsaking G-d and His Commandments

If You Think Worshiping Jesus As L-rd Or G-d Or Both Find Favor In G-d’s Eyes – Think Again!

*If you still decide to continue worshiping Jesus and the Trinity – may G-d have mercy on you.

An emissary of Hashem went up from Gilgal to Bochim. He said, “I brought you up from Egypt and I brought you to the land that I swore to your forefathers. And I said, ‘I shall never annul My covenant with you,
2:1
but you shall not seal a covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall break apart their altars.’ But you did not hearken to My voice! What is this that you have done?
2:2
So I also said, ‘I shall not chase them out before you, and they will be unto you [as thorns in your] side, and their gods will be a trap for you.’”
2:3
The people served Hashem all the days of Joshua and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of Hashem, which He had done for Israel.
:7

A new generation arose after them that did not know Hashem, nor the deeds that He had performed for Israel.
:10
The Children of Israel would do what was evil in the eyes of Hashem, and would worship the Baalim.
:11
They would forsake Hashem, the God of their forefathers, Who took them out of the land of Egypt, and follow the gods of others, from among the gods of the peoples that were around them; they would prostrate themselves to them and anger Hashem.
:12
They would forsake Hashem and worship the Baal and the Ashtaroth.
:13
Whenever they would go out [in battle], the hand of Hashem would be upon them for evil — as Hashem had spoken and as Hashem had sworn to them — and they would be very distressed.
:15
Then Hashem would set up judges who would save them from the hand of their plunderers.
:16
But they would not hearken to their judges either, for they would stray after the gods of others and prostrate themselves to them. They would turn away quickly from the path that their forefathers had traveled, to hearken to the commandments of Hashem; they did not do so.
:17
But then it would happen that upon the death of the judge they would turn back and be even more corrupt than their forefathers, to follow the gods of others, to worship them, and to prostrate themselves before them. They would not omit any of their misdeeds or their stubborn way.
:19
So the wrath of Hashem would flare against Israel and He would say, “Because this nation has violated My covenant that I commanded their forefathers and they did not hearken to My voice.
:20
I, too, shall no longer drive away any man from before them, from among the nations that Joshua left when he died,
:21
in order to test Israel through them: Are they observing the way of Hashem, to follow them as their forefathers observed, or not?”
:22

1 And a messenger of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bochim and said (in God’s name), “I will take you up from Egypt and I have brought you to the land that I have sworn to your forefathers and I said, ‘I will not break my covenant with you forever.
2 And you shall not make a covenant with the inhabitants of this land, their altars you shall smash,’ but you have not obeyed Me, what have you done?
3 And I also said, ‘I will not drive them out from before you, and they will be pokers to you and their gods will be a stumbling block to you.’ “
4 And it was while the messenger of the Lord was saying these words to all the children of Israel, that the nation raised their voices and cried.
5 And they called the name of that place Bochim and they sacrificed to the Lord there.
6 And Joshua had sent away the nation, and the children of Israel went, each man to his inheritance to possess the land.
7 And the nation served the Lord during all the days of Joshua and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua and who had seen all the great deed of the Lord that He had performed for Israel.
8 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being one hundred and ten years old.
9 And they buried him within the border of his inheritance in Timnath Cheres on the mountain of Ephraim, to the north of Mount Gaash.
10 And also all that generation were gathered to their forefathers, and there arose another generation after them, who knew not the Lord nor the deed which He had done for Israel.
11 And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the eyes of the Lord and they served the Baalim.
12 And they forsook the God of their forefathers, Who had brought them up from the land of Egypt, and they went after other gods, of the gods of the nations that were around them, and they bowed to them and they provoked the Lord.
13 And they forsook the Lord and served the Baal and the Ashtaroth.
14 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and He delivered them into the hands of spoilers and they spoiled them, and He gave them over into the hands of their enemies around, and they could no longer stand before their enemies.
15 Wherever they went out, the hand of the Lord was against them for evil, as the Lord had spoken and as the Lord had sworn to them, and they were greatly distressed.
16 And the Lord raised up judges and they saved them from the hands of those who had spoiled them.
17 But also their judges they did not obey, for they went astray after other gods, and they bowed to them; they turned aside quickly from the way wherein their forefathers had walked, obeying the commandments of the Lord, (but) they did not do so.
18 And when the Lord raised them up judges, then the Lord was with the judge and saved them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge, for the Lord retracted, because of their cry by reason of them that oppressed them and crushed them.
19 And it was when the judge died, that they would return and deal more corruptly than their forefathers, going after other gods to serve them and to bow down to them; they did not diminish of their practices nor of their stubborn way.
20 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel and He said, “Because this nation has transgressed my covenant which I commanded their forefathers and have not obeyed Me,
21 I too will not continue to drive out any man from before them, of the nations that Joshua left and he died.
22 In order to test Israel through them, whether they would keep the way of the Lord to walk therein as their forefathers did keep it, or not.”
23 And the Lord left these nations without driving them out hastily, and He did not give them into the hand of Joshua.

Bible reading in the form of Scripture in pictures can have a profound impact on those who may have never read a chapter in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). Viewing pivotal verses in a visual context can deepen one’s understanding of the text and provide a unique perspective. The images may help to illustrate important themes and messages that may not have been as easily grasped through standard reading. Additionally, this method can be particularly beneficial for those who struggle with traditional reading methods or for those who are more visually inclined. The power of visual storytelling has been utilized for centuries, and when paired with the timeless words of Scripture, it has the potential to bring new life and meaning to the ancient text. Ultimately, whatever method one chooses to engage with the Bible, the most important thing is to seek a deeper understanding of God’s word, and to apply it to our lives in a meaningful way.
