THE PROPHETS
Joshua
Yehoshua
The Book of Joshua, in the Hebrew-Jewish Bible, narrates the entry of the Children of Israel into the Promised Land of Canaan and their conquest and partition of the land under the leadership of Joshua, as Moses’ successor. It details the Israelites’ miraculous crossing of the Jordan River, the fall of Jericho, the battles of Ai and Gibeon, and the division of the land among the twelve tribes. Joshua resonates with Moses, in which he exhorts the Israelites to remain faithful to G-d and His commandments.
Chapter 5
Joshua Chapter 5 Elaborates on the Circumcision of the New Generation Proving that G-d’s Commandments are Never Limited to Certain Day or Age But it Prevails in Perpetuity
Obedience To G-d’s Commandments
Not believing in Jesus, and disregarding G-d’s commandments is the key to salvation.
*Note that you cannot do both. For believing in other god alone is a clear disobedience to G-d’s commandments.
“The National Circumcision”
“The Pesach (Passover) Offering”
“The Angel”
It happened that when all the Amorite kings who were on the western side of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings who were by the sea heard that Hashem had dried up the Jordan’s waters for the sake of the Children of Israel until they had crossed, their hearts melted, and there was no longer [any] spirit within them because of the Children of Israel.
5:1
At that time Hashem said to Joshua, “Make sharp knives for yourself and circumcise the Children of Israel again, a second time.”
5:2
This is the reason why Joshua circumcised [them]: The entire people that had gone forth from Egypt – the males, all the men of war – had died in the Wilderness on the way, after they went forth from Egypt.
:4
because for forty years the Children of Israel journeyed in the Wilderness until the demise of the entire nation – the men of war — who went forth from Egypt and had not heeded the voice of Hashem, …
:6
Hashem said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the disgrace of Egypt from upon you.” He named that place Gilgal [Rolling], to this day.
:9
They ate from the grain of the land on the day after the Pesach-offering, matzos and roasted grain, on this very day.
:11
The manna was depleted the following day, when they ate from the grain of the land; there was no longer any manna for the Children of Israel. They ate from the grain of the Land of Canaan that year.
:12
He said, “No, for I am the commander of Hashem’s legion; now I have come.” Joshua fell before him to the ground and prostrated himself, and said to him, “What does my master say to his servant?”
:14
The commander of Hashem’s legion said to Joshua, “Remove your shoe from upon your foot, for the place upon which you stand is holy.” And Joshua did so.
:15
1 And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, who were on the side of the Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel until they had passed over, that their heart melted, nor was there spirit in them anymore, because of the children of Israel.
2 At that time the Lord said to Joshua, Make for yourself sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.
3 And Joshua made for himself sharp knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.
4 And this is the reason why Joshua did circumcise: All the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, all the men of war, had died in the desert by the way after they came out of Egypt.
5 For all the people that came out were circumcised, but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, they had not circumcised.
6 For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, until all the people, the men of war, that came out of Egypt, were consumed, those who did not listen to the voice of the Lord, to whom the Lord had sworn that He would not show them the land, which the Lord had sworn to their forefathers that He would give us, a land that flows with milk and honey.
7 And their children, whom he raised up in their stead, them Joshua circumcised, for they had not circumcised them by the way.
8 And it was, when all the people were finished being circumcised, that they remained in their places in the camp, until they recovered.
9 And the Lord said to Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you. And he called the name of the place Gilgal to this day.
10 And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and they made the Passover sacrifice on the fourteenth day of the month at evening in the plains of Jericho.
11 And they ate of the grain of the land on the morrow of the Passover, unleavened cakes and parched grain on this very day.
12 And the manna ceased on the morrow when they ate of the grain of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna anymore; and they ate of the produce of the land of Canaan that year.
13 And it was when Joshua was in Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and saw, and, behold, a man was standing opposite him with his sword drawn in his hand; and Joshua went to him, and said to him, Are you for us, or for our adversaries?
14 And he said, No, but I am the captain of the host of the Lord; I have now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and prostrated himself, and said to him, What does my lord say to his servant?
15 And the captain of the Lord’s host said to Joshua, Remove your shoe from your foot; for the place upon which you stand is holy. And Joshua did so.
