Joshua Chapter 14

THE PROPHETS

Joshua

Yehoshua

The Book of Joshua, in the Hebrew-Jewish Bible, narrates the entry of the Children of Israel into the Promised Land of Canaan and their conquest and partition of the land under the leadership of Joshua, as Moses’ successor. It details the Israelites’ miraculous crossing of the Jordan River, the fall of Jericho, the battles of Ai and Gibeon, and the division of the land among the twelve tribes. Joshua resonates with Moses, in which he exhorts the Israelites to remain faithful to G-d and His commandments.

Chapter 14

14th Chapter of Joshua Grants a Request with No Question Ask as a Result of Obedience to G-d’s Command

Question:

Was there ever a time that G-d rewarded a person, people or land for not following and not obeying what G-d had commanded?

Answer:
Yes. In the context of the Greek book – New Testament.

But never in the Hebrew Scripture (Old Testament).

v. 14 is a very clear and plain example in this chapter.

“The Division of Canaan”
“Caleb’s Request”
“Joshua Gives Hebron to Caleb”

These are [the areas] that the Children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, which were distributed to them as heritages — by Elazar the Kohen and Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the ancestral [families] of the tribes of the Children of Israel —
14:1
by the lottery of their inheritance, as Hashem had commanded through Moses, for the nine tribes and the half tribe.
14:2
For Moses had given the heritage of the two tribes and half tribe across the Jordan, but to the Levites he had given no heritage among them.
14:3
The children of Joseph, however, were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. …
:4
As Hashem had commanded Moses, so the Children of Israel did, and they divided the land.
:5
The Children of Judah approached Joshua in Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You are aware of the matter that Hashem told Moses, the man of God, concerning me and concerning you in Kadesh-barnea.
:6
Moses swore on that day, saying, ‘Surely the land on which your foot trod will be to you as a heritage, and to your children forever, because you fulfilled [the will of] Hashem, my God.
:9
… I am eighty-five years old today. I am still as strong today as I was on the day that Moses sent me. As my strength was then, so my strength is now for war – to go out and to come in.
:10-11
Joshua blessed him and gave Hebron to Caleb son of Jephunneh as a heritage.
:13
Therefore, Hebron became the heritage of Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he fulfilled the will of Hashem, God of Israel.
:14

1 And these are the cities which the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed for inheritance to them.
2 By lot was their inheritance, as the Lord commanded through Moses, for the nine tribes and for the half tribe.
3 For Moses had given the inheritance of two tribes and a half tribe on the other side of the Jordan, but to the Levites he gave no inheritance among them.
4 For the children of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim, but they gave no part to the Levites, in the land, save cities to dwell in, and the open land about them, for their cattle and for their flocks.
5 As the Lord commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did, and they divided the land.
6 Then the children of Judah came to Joshua in Gilgal; and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know the thing that the Lord spoke to Moses the man of God concerning me and concerning you in Kadesh- barnea.
7 I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord, sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land; and I brought him back word as it was in my heart.
8 And my brothers that went up with me, made the heart of the people melt; but I fulfilled the will of the Lord my God.
9 And Moses swore on that day, saying, ‘Surely the land upon which your foot has trodden shall be your inheritance, and your children’s forever, because you have fulfilled the will of the Lord my God.’
10 And now, behold, the Lord has kept me alive, as He spoke, these forty-five years, from the time the Lord spoke this word to Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness; and now, behold, I am this day eighty-five years old.
11 I am still as strong this day as I was on the day that Moses sent me; as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.
12 And now, give me this mountain, of which the Lord spoke on that day, for you heard on that day how the ‘Anakim were there, and that the cities were big and fortified. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall drive them out, as the Lord spoke.”
13 And Joshua blessed him, and gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance.
14 Hebron, therefore, became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he fulfilled the will of the Lord God of Israel.
15 And the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-arba (the city of Arba); Arba was the greatest man among the ‘Anakim. And the land had rest from war.

Bible reading in the form of Scripture in pictures can have a profound impact on those who may have never read a chapter in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). Viewing pivotal verses in a visual context can deepen one’s understanding of the text and provide a unique perspective. The images may help to illustrate important themes and messages that may not have been as easily grasped through standard reading. Additionally, this method can be particularly beneficial for those who struggle with traditional reading methods or for those who are more visually inclined. The power of visual storytelling has been utilized for centuries, and when paired with the timeless words of Scripture, it has the potential to bring new life and meaning to the ancient text. Ultimately, whatever method one chooses to engage with the Bible, the most important thing is to seek a deeper understanding of God’s word, and to apply it to our lives in a meaningful way.
