Chapter 1

Joel Starts with a Declaration to Repent and the Power of G-d’s Word to those Who Keep them

Joel Is Told By G-d To Preach Repentance

Not only to the current generation. But, also to the coming generation.

Nothing happens by accident; especially on a large scale.

Question:
Will Jesus’ incarnation, crucifixion, death, resurrection, ascension and coming back soon be found in this book?

We have never seen any since Genesis.

Nonetheless, let us keep reading or listening… to not believe, but know the truth.

The word of Hashem, which came to Joel son of Pethuel: … Tell your children about it, and your children to their children, and their children to another generation.
1:1-3
What remained from the cutting-locust the abundant-locust has devoured; what remained from the abundant-locust the chewing-locust has devoured; and what remained from the chewing-locust the demolishing-locust has devoured.

Awaken, you drunkards, and weep, and wail all you wine-drinkers, over the fine wine that has been eliminated from your mouths.

For a nation has come up against My land, mighty and without number; its teeth are the teeth of a lion, and it has the molars of a lion cub.
:6
Gird yourselves [with sackcloth] and lament, O Kohanim; wail, O ministers of the Altar; come spend the night in sackcloth, O ministers of my God, for meal-offering and libation have been withheld from the Temple of your God.

Decree a fast; declare an assembly; gather the elders [and] all the inhabitants of the land to the Temple of Hashem your God, and cry out to Hashem.
:14
Woe for that day! For the day of Hashem is near, and like [sudden] plunder it will come from the Almighty.
:15
To You, Hashem, I call out, for fire has consumed the dwellings of the wilderness, and flame has scorched the trees of the field.

1 The word of the Lord, which came to Joel son of Pethuel.
2 Hear this, you elders, and hearken, all you inhabitants of the land. Did this come about in your days or in the days of your forefathers?
3 Tell your children about it, and your children to their children, and their children to another generation.
4 What the shearing locust left over, the increasing locust devoured, and what the increasing locust left over the nibbling locust devoured, and what the nibbling locust left over the finishing locust devoured.
5 Awaken, you drunkards, and weep; and wail, all you wine drinkers, concerning the strong wine, which has been cut off from your mouth.
6 For a nation has ascended upon my land, mighty and innumerable; its teeth are like the teeth of an old lion, and its molars are like those of a young lion.
7 He has laid my vine waste, and my fig tree into a disappointment; he has peeled it and cast it off, its branches have become white.
8 Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.
9 Meal offering and libation have been cut off from the house of the Lord; the priests, the ministers of the Lord, mourn.
10 The field has been plundered, the soil destroyed, for corn has been plundered, must has dried up, oil has been cut off.
11 Be ashamed, you plowmen; wail, you vinedressers, for wheat and for barley, for the harvest of the field is lost.
12 The vines have dried up, and the fig trees have been cut off; the pomegranates, also the date palms and the apples, all the trees of the field have dried up, for joy has dried up from the sons of man.
13 Gird yourselves and lament, you priests; wail, you ministers of the altar; come, lodge in sackcloth, you ministers of my God, for the meal offering and the libations have been withheld from the house of your God.
14 Proclaim a fast, call an assembly; assemble, you elders, all the inhabitants of the land to the house of the Lord your God, and cry out to the Lord.
15 Woe is to the day, for the day of the Lord is near, and like plunder, it will come from the Almighty.
16 Is not the food cut off from before our eyes? From the house of our God joy and jubilation?
17 Casks of wine have gathered mold under their bungs, the storehouses are laid desolate, garners are demolished, for the corn has dried out.
18 How the cattle sighs, herds of cattle are perplexed, for they have no pasture; also flocks of sheep are laid waste.
19 To You, O Lord, I call, for a fire has consumed the dwellings of the wilderness, and a flame has burnt all the trees of the field.
20 Also, the beasts of the field cry out to You for the springs of water have dried up, and fire has consumed the dwellings of the wilderness.

They provide insights into the political, religious, and social aspects of ancient Israel during that period. Samuel (Shmuel in Hebrew) anointed both Saul and David as kings of Israel with the approval of G-d and at His command.

The Book of Joel (Yoel in Hebrew) is another prophetic book containing the prophecies of the prophet Joel, who lived during a time of locust infestation and drought. The empires of Babylonia, Persian, Greeks and Romans are God’s judgment on Israel for their sins; likened to the locusts swarms in succession. Moreover, the coming Day of the Lord, and the restoration of Israel is mentioned as well.

The Book of Jonah (Yonah in the Hebrew-Jewish Bible) is a narrative prophetic book that tells the story of the prophet Jonah, who is reluctant to fulfill G-d’s command to prophesy against the city of Nineveh. Instead, Jonah flees to Tarshish, but a great storm arises and the sailors throw Jonah overboard to appease the storm. Jonah is swallowed by a large fish, where he prays to G-d. After three days and three nights, the fish vomits Jonah onto dry land. Jonah then goes to Nineveh and delivers God’s message of repentance, leading to the city’s repentance and God’s mercy. The book highlights matters of God’s sovereignty, mercy, and the importance of obedience.
The Book of Micah (Michah in the Hebrew-Jewish Bible). Micah, who lived during the 8th century BCE during the reigns of the kings of Judah and Israel. Micah’s prophecies address social justice, the condemnation of injustice, the coming judgment of G-d on Israel and other nations for their sins, and the promise of a future restoration and redemption. Micah’s prophecies are known for its powerful outlook and emotional intensity.
The Book of Nahum (Nachum in the Hebrew-Jewish Bible).
Prophet Nahum, who lived during the 7th century BCE. The book primarily addresses the judgment of G-d upon the city of Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian Empire, for its arrogance, cruelty, and violence. Nahum’s prophecies are known for their vivid descriptions of Nineveh’s destruction and their emphasis on G-d’s justice and sovereignty.
The Book of Habakkuk (Chavakuk in the Hebrew-Jewish Bible). Habakkuk, who lived during the 7th century BCE. The book addresses themes such as the suffering of the righteous, the coming judgment of G-d on the wicked, and the assurance of G-d’s ultimate victory. Habakkuk’s prophecies are known for their powerful and poetic language, and his book has been a source of inspiration and comfort to many throughout history.
The Book of Zephaniah (Tzefaniah in the Hebrew-Jewish Bible), a prophetic book containing the prophecies of the prophet Zephaniah, who lived during the 7th century BCE. The coming judgment of G-d on Judah and Jerusalem for their sins, the destruction of the wicked, and the promise of restoration for the righteous are accounts written in Zephaniah. The book addresses the corruption of the priesthood, the neglect of religious practices, and the coming judgment of G-d upon those who have strayed from His ways.
