Chapter 42

Jeremiah Chapter 42 Exposing Man’s True Disobedience and Selfishness Against G-d

Prayers Are For G-d’s Will To Be Fulfilled Not Your Will

Do your best, and leave G-d the rest.

If unsuccessful, that only means it is not G-d’s. Thus, seek strength to accept G-d’s answer, which is “No.”

Never insist, implying you know better than G-d.

“Request To Jeremiah To Pray”

“But They Have Not Listen Still”

.. “May our supplication please be acceptable to you, and may you pray on our behalf, to Hashem our God, on behalf of all this remnant, for we are left as few out of many, as your eyes see us.
42:2
And may Hashem your God tell us the way in which we should go and the thing we should do.”
42:3
Jeremiah the prophet said to them, “I have heard. Behold, I will pray to Hashem your God, as you have said; and it shall be that whatever Hashem will answer you, I will tell you; I will not withhold anything from you.”
:4
They said to Jeremiah, “Let Hashem be a true and faithful witness against us, if we do not act according to everything that Hashem your God tells you concerning us.
:5
Whether for better or for worse, we will obey the voice of Hashem our God, to Whom we are sending you, in order that it should be good for us when we listen to the voice of Hashem our God.”
:6
If you stay in this land, I will build you [up] and I will not destroy you, and I will plant you and not uproot; for I have relented of the misfortune that I have brought upon you.
:10
Do not be afraid of the king of Babylonia of whom you are afraid; do not be afraid of him — the word of Hashem — for I am with you to save you and rescue you from his hand.
:11
I will show you mercy, and he will have mercy on you and return you to your land.
:12
But if you say, ‘We shall not stay in this land,’ not heeding the voice of Hashem your God,
:13
then hear now the word of Hashem, O remnant of Judah! Thus said Hashem, Master of Legions, God of Israel: If you would turn your face to go to Egypt and you will come to sojourn there,
:15
the very sword of which you are afraid will reach you there in the land of Egypt, and the very hunger about which you worry will pursue you in Egypt, and there you will die.
:16
For you have deceived me about your true thoughts, for you sent me to Hashem your God, saying, “Pray on our behalf to Hashem your God, and whatever Hashem our God says, tell us, and we will do it”;
:20
and I told you this day, but you did not listen to the voice of Hashem, your God, and to all that he has sent me to [tell] you.
:21
Know now for certain that you will die by the sword, by the famine and by the pestilence in the place in which you desire to go to live.
:22

1 And all the officers of the armies and Johanan the son of Kareah and Jezaniah the son of Hoshiah and all the people from the smallest to the greatest, came near.
2 And they said to Jeremiah the prophet, “Let our supplication now fall before you, and pray in our behalf to the Lord your God on behalf of all this remnant, for we remain few out of many, as your eyes see us.
3 And then let the Lord your God tell the way we should go and the thing we should do.
4 And Jeremiah the prophet said to them, “I have heard [you]. Behold I will pray to the Lord your God according to your words, and it will come to pass that whatever the Lord answers you I will tell you; I will not withhold anything from you.”
5 And they said to Jeremiah, “May the Lord be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not do according to the entire matter that the Lord your God shall send you to us.
6 Whether good or bad, we will hearken to the voice of the Lord our God, to Whom we are sending you, in order that it be good for us, for we will hearken to the voice of the Lord our God.
7 And it came to pass at the end of ten days that the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah.
8 And he called to Johanan the son of Kareah and to all the officers of the armies that were with him, both great and small.
9 And he said to them: So said the Lord God of Israel, to Whom you have sent me to present your supplication before Him.
10 If you dwell in this land, I will build you up and I will not pluck you up, for I have repented of the evil that I have done to you.
11 Fear not the king of Babylon whom you fear; fear it not, says the Lord, for I am with you to redeem you and to save you from his hand.
12 And I will give you mercy, and he shall have mercy on you, and he shall return you to your land.
13 But if you say, “We will not dwell in this land, not to hearken to the voice of the Lord your God,
14 saying, ‘No, but we will come to the land of Egypt, where we will neither see war not hear the sound of the horn, nor be hungry for bread, and there we will dwell.’ “
15 And now, therefore, hearken to the word of the Lord, O remnant of Judah, so said the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel; If you direct your faces to come to Egypt and you come to dwell there,
16 the sword that you fear will overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine that you are worried about shall overtake you there in Egypt, and there you shall die.
17 And [so] shall [it] be [with] all the men who directed their faces to Egypt to sojourn there; they shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence, and they shall have neither survivor nor refugee because of the evil that I am bringing upon them.
18 For so said the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel; As My wrath and My fury have been poured out upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so shall My wrath and My fury be poured out upon you when you come to Egypt, and you shall be for an oath and for a bewilderment and for a curse and for a reproach, and you shall no longer see this place.
19 The Lord spoke concerning you, O remnant of Judah; do not come to Egypt. You shall know certainly that I have warned you today.
20 For you have wilfully deceived, for you have sent me to the Lord your God, saying, “Pray for us to the Lord our God, and according to all that the Lord our God shall say, so tell us, and we will do [it].”
21 And I told you today, but you did not hearken to the voice of the Lord your God or to all that He sent me to you.
22 And now, you shall certainly know that you shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence in the place where you desired to sojourn.

Bible reading in the form of Scripture in pictures can have a profound impact on those who may have never read a chapter in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). Viewing pivotal verses in a visual context can deepen one’s understanding of the text and provide a unique perspective. The images may help to illustrate important themes and messages that may not have been as easily grasped through standard reading. Additionally, this method can be particularly beneficial for those who struggle with traditional reading methods or for those who are more visually inclined. The power of visual storytelling has been utilized for centuries, and when paired with the timeless words of Scripture, it has the potential to bring new life and meaning to the ancient text. Ultimately, whatever method one chooses to engage with the Bible, the most important thing is to seek a deeper understanding of God’s word, and to apply it to our lives in a meaningful way.
