Jeremiah Chapter 35 Zooms In to Loyalty and Obedience Against the Contrary or Opposite

Jeremiah Is Told To Witness Loyalty And Obedience

G-d Himself set examples of obedience and disobedience.

Disobedience to His commandment is never rewarded. Moreover, the worship of the gods of others (Jesus, Mary & etc.) is a clear example of disobedience repeatedly mentioned in the whole of the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament).

“The Rechabites’ Loyalty To Their Ancestor”

“Lesson To Be Learned”

“Go to the house of the Rechabites and speak to them. Bring them to the Temple of Hashem, to one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.”
35:2
Before the members of the house of the Rechabites I placed drinking bowls full of wine and cups, and I said to them, “Drink wine!”
:5
But they said, “We do not drink wine, for Jehonadab son of Rechab, our ancestor, commanded us, saying, ‘You shall not drink wine, you or your descendants, forever;
:6
and a house you shall not build, seed you shall not sow, a vineyard you shall not plant, nor shall [even] be [any] for you. Rather live in tents all your days, so that you may live many years upon the land in which you sojourn.
:7
We heeded the voice of Jehonadab son of Rechab, our ancestor, according to all that he commanded us, not to drink wine all our days — we, our wives, our sons and our daughters;
:8
and not to build houses as our dwellings; and there will not be for us vineyard or field or seed.
:9
Rather we live in tents, for we hearkened and acted according to everything that Jehonadab our ancestor commanded us.
:10
“Thus said Hashem, Master of Legions, the God of Israel: Go and say to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem: Will you not learn a lesson, to hearken to My words? — the word of Hashem.
:13
Upheld were the words of Jehonadab son of Rechab, who commanded his children not to drink wine, and they have not drunk wine until this day, for they obey the commandment of their ancestor. Yet I have spoken to you, arising early and speaking, and you have not listened to Me.
:14
I sent all My servants the prophets, arising early and sending [them], saying, ‘Repent now, each of you from his evil way; improve your deeds! Do not go after the gods of others to worship them, so that you may settle upon the land that I have given to you and your forefathers.’ But you did not incline your ear and you did not listen to Me.
:15
For the children of Jehonadab son of Rechab have upheld the word of their ancestor that he commanded them, but this people have not listened to Me!
:16
Therefore, thus says Hashem, God of Legions, God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing to Judah and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have spoken concerning them, because I spoke to them and they did not listen, and I called out to them but they would not answer.”
:17

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the days of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying:
2 Go to the house of the Rechabites and speak with them, and I will bring them to the House of the Lord, to one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.
3 And I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah, and his brothers and all his sons and the entire house of the Rechabites.
4 And I brought them to the House of the Lord, to the chamber of the sons of Hanan the son of Igdaliah, the man of God, which is by the chamber of the princes, which is above the chamber of Maaseiah the son of Shallum, the keeper of the vessels.
5 And I placed before the sons of the house of the Rechabites goblets full of wine, and cups, and I said to them, “Drink wine.”
6 And they said, “We will not drink wine, for Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, commanded us saying, “You shall not drink wine, you or your children forever.
7 And you shall not build a house, neither shall you sow nor shall you plant a vineyard, nor shall you have [any], but you shall dwell in tents all your days in order that you live many days on the face of the land where you dwell.
8 And we hearkened to the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, to all that he commanded us, not to drink wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, and our daughters.
9 And not to build houses for our dwelling, and not to have a vineyard, a field, or seed.
10 And we have dwelt in tents, and we have hearkened and done according to all that Jonadab our father has commanded us.
11 And it came to pass when Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon came up to the land, that we said, “Come and let us go to Jerusalem because of the army of the Chaldeans and because of the army of Aram, and we dwelt in Jerusalem.”
12 And the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying:
13 So said the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel; Go and say to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem: Will you not receive instruction to hearken to My words? says the Lord.
14 The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, which he commanded his sons not to drink wine, are performed, and they have not drunk wine until this day for they hearkened to the commandment of their father, and I have spoken to you, speaking betimes, yet you have not hearkened to Me.
15 And I have sent to you all My servants the prophets, sending betimes, saying: Repent now, each man from his evil way and improve your deeds, and do not follow strange gods to worship them, and dwell on the soil that I have given you and your forefathers, but you did not incline your ear[s], and you did not hearken to Me.
16 For the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father, that he commanded them, but this people has not hearkened to Me.
17 Therefore, so said the Lord God of Hosts, the God of Israel; Behold I am bringing upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have spoken concerning them, because I spoke to them but they did not obey, and I called to them, but they did not respond.
18 And to the house of the Rechabites, Jeremiah said: So said the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel; Because you have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and you have kept all his commandments and have done according to all that he commanded you,
19 Therefore, so said the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel; There shall not be cut off from Jonadab the son of Rechab a man standing before Me for all times.

Bible reading in the form of Scripture in pictures can have a profound impact on those who may have never read a chapter in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). Viewing pivotal verses in a visual context can deepen one’s understanding of the text and provide a unique perspective. The images may help to illustrate important themes and messages that may not have been as easily grasped through standard reading. Additionally, this method can be particularly beneficial for those who struggle with traditional reading methods or for those who are more visually inclined. The power of visual storytelling has been utilized for centuries, and when paired with the timeless words of Scripture, it has the potential to bring new life and meaning to the ancient text. Ultimately, whatever method one chooses to engage with the Bible, the most important thing is to seek a deeper understanding of God’s word, and to apply it to our lives in a meaningful way.
