II Samuel Chapter 6

THE PROPHETS

II SAMUEL

SHMUEL II

The Books of I and II Samuel, also known as the Books of Samuel (originally one book), recount the life and times of the prophet Samuel, the establishment of the Israelite monarchy, and the reigns of the first two kings of Israel, Saul and David. They provide insights into the political, religious, and social aspects of ancient Israel during that period. Samuel (Shmuel in Hebrew) anointed both Saul and David as kings of Israel with the approval of G-d and at His command.

Samuel is the greatest of all the judges, and a prophet who was of the same stature of Moses and Aaron.

The most coverage of this book in its context is centered in the life of David. Known as man of faith, unselfish leader, great warrior, loyal friend, compassionate in victory, humble in defeat, and model of repentance.

Chapter 6

II Samuel on the 6th Chapter Tells the Tale About the Ark of G-d Being Carried and Sent to the City of David

The Ark Of G-d

Some controversies happened in this chapter, as follows:

1. Death of Uzzah

2. David’s Dance

3. Michal’s Concerned Of David’s Unlikely Behavior As King

Reason of Uzzah’s death is brought about by him not regarding the Ark as so holy, and to fall to the ground.

David’s rejoicing with only with his linen tunic is a sign of his humility toward Hashem and His people.

Michal’s thought otherwise as she misunderstood David, before she was rebuked by David.

“David and His People Celebrate as the Ark is Brought to the City of David”

David and all the people that were with him arose and went forth from Baale-judah to bring up from the Ark of God, which is called by [its] name: “The Name of Hashem, Master of Legions, Who is enthroned upon the Cherubim, is upon it.”
6:2
David and the entire House of Israel were rejoicing before Hashem with all kinds of cypress-wood instruments — with harps, lyres, drums, timbrels and cymbals.
:5
They came to the threshing-floor of Nacon, and Uzzah reached out to the Ark of God and grasped it, for the oxen had dislodged it.
:6
Hashem became angry at Uzzah and God struck him there for the blunder; and Uzzah died there by the Ark of God.
:7
David feared Hashem on that day, and he said, “How can the Ark of Hashem come to me?”
:9
King David was told, “Hashem has blessed the house of Obed-edom and everything he has because of the Ark of God.” David then went and brought up the Ark of God from the house of Obed-edom to the City of David with joy.
:12
David danced with all [his] strength before Hashem; David was girded in a linen tunic.
:14
David and the entire House of Israel brought up the Ark of Hashem with loud, joyous sound, and the sound of the shofar.
:15
And it happened as the Ark of Hashem arrived at the City of David, that Michal daughter of Saul peered out the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before Hashem, and she became contemptuous of him in her heart.
:16
When David had finished bringing up the elevation-offering and the peace-offerings, he blessed the people with the Name of Hashem, Master of Legions.
:18
David returned to bless his household. Michal daughter of Saul went out to meet David and said, “How honored was the king of Israel today, who was exposed today in the presence of his servants’ maidservants, as on of the boors would be exposed!?
:20
David answered Michal, “In the presence of Hashem, Who chose me over your father and over his entire house to appoint me as ruler over the people of Hashem, over Israel — before Hashem I shall rejoice!
:21
And I shall behave even more humbly than this, and I shall be lowly in my eyes; and among the maidservants of whom you spoke — among them will I be honored!”
:22
Michal daughter of Saul had no child until the day of her death.
:23

1 And David continued [to gather] all the chosen of Israel, thirty thousand.
2 And David arose and went with all the people that were with him, from Baale-judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called a name, the name of the Lord of Hosts who dwell upon the cherubim [being] upon it.
3 And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and they carried it from the house of Avinadav that was on the hill; and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Avinadav, drove the new cart.
4 And they brought it out of the house of Avinadav, which was on the hill, with the ark of God, and Achyo went before the ark.
5 And David and all the house of Israel made merry with all [manner of instruments of] cypress wood, and with harps, and with psalteries, and with timbrels, and with sistra, and with cymbals.
6 And they came to Goren-nachon, and Uzzah put forth [his hand] to the ark of God, and grasped hold of it, for the oxen swayed it.
7 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah; and God struck him down there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God.
8 And David was angered, because the Lord had made a breach upon Uzzah; and he called that place Peretz-uzzah, unto this day.
9 And David was afraid of the Lord that day; and he said: ‘How can the ark of the Lord come to me?’
10 And David did not want to remove unto him the ark of the Lord, into the city of David; and David took it aside to the house of Oved-edom the Gittite.
11 And the ark of the Lord dwelled in the house of Oved-edom the Gittite three months; and the Lord blessed Oved-edom, and all his household.
12 And it was told to King David saying: ‘The Lord has blessed the house of Oved-edom, and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of the Lord. And David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Oved-edom into the city of David with joy.
13 And it was when the bearers of the ark of God had trodden six paces, he sacrificed an ox and a fatling.
14 And David danced with all his might before the Lord; and David was girded with a linen ephod.
15 And David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting and with the sound of [the] shofar.
16 And [as] the ark of the Lord came [into] the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul peered through the window, and she saw the king David hopping and dancing before the Lord; and she loathed him in her heart.
17 And they brought the ark of the Lord, and they set it in its place, inside the tent that David had pitched for it; and David offered burnt-offerings before the Lord and peace-offerings.
18 And David finished offering the burnt-offering and the peace-offerings, and he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of Hosts.
19 And he distributed to all the people, to the whole multitude of Israel, both to men and women, to each individual a loaf of bread, and a portion of meat, and a barrel of wine. And all the people departed, every one to his home.
20 And David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and she said, “How honored was today the king of Israel, who exposed himself today in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as would expose himself one of the idlers.”
21 And David said unto Michal; “Before the Lord, who chose me above your father, and above all his house, to appoint me prince over the people of the Lord, over Israel; therefore I have made merry before the Lord.
22 And if I be demeaned more than this, and be abashed in mine own eyes, [yet] of the maidservants of which you have spoken, with them will I get me honor.”
23 And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child until the day of her death.

Bible reading in the form of Scripture in pictures can have a profound impact on those who may have never read a chapter in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). Viewing pivotal verses in a visual context can deepen one’s understanding of the text and provide a unique perspective. The images may help to illustrate important themes and messages that may not have been as easily grasped through standard reading. Additionally, this method can be particularly beneficial for those who struggle with traditional reading methods or for those who are more visually inclined. The power of visual storytelling has been utilized for centuries, and when paired with the timeless words of Scripture, it has the potential to bring new life and meaning to the ancient text. Ultimately, whatever method one chooses to engage with the Bible, the most important thing is to seek a deeper understanding of God’s word, and to apply it to our lives in a meaningful way.
