Genesis Chapter 11

THE TORAH

GENESIS

BEREISHIT

The book of Bereishit (also known as Genesis) is the first book of the Torah. It begins with the creation of the world by G-d in six days. After creating the earth, G-d brings forth Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. The first humans are quickly banished from the garden after breaking G-d’s commandment and eating from the Tree of Knowledge. The lineage of humanity is established as the book chronicles the descendants of Adam and Eve. The narrative follows the lives of well-known figures such as Cain and Abel, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph. The book explores themes of human nature, morality, and faith, as well as the relationship between G-d and humanity. The book ends with the descendants of Abraham settling in Egypt, setting the stage for the following book in the Torah, Exodus.

Chapter 11

Genesis in Holy Bible Reading

If you are told that G-d needs to become a man to come down from heaven, you have to re-think your beliefs.

This chapter tells the opposite of the Greek book – New Testament’s core doctrine/teaching: “G-d becoming a man.”

The whole earth was of one language and of common purpose.
11:1
And they said, “Come, let us build us a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed across the whole earth.”
:4
Hashem descended to look at the city and tower which the sons of man built,
:5
Come, let us descend and there confuse their language, that they should not understand one another’s language.”
:7
And Hashem dispersed them from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city.
:8
These are the descendants of Shem: …
:10
Shelah had lived thirty years when he begot Eber.
:14
When Serug had lived thirty years, he begot Nahor.
:22
When Nahor had lived twenty-nine years, he begot Terah.
:24
When Terah had lived seventy years, he begot Abram, Nahor and Haran.
:26
Now these are the chronicles of Terah: Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begot Lot.
:27
And Abram and Nahor took themselves wives; the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and the father of Iscah.
:29
And Sarai was barren, she had no child.
:30
The days of Terah were two hundred and five years, and Terah died in Haran.
:32

1 Now the entire earth was of one language and uniform words.
2 And it came to pass when they traveled from the east, that they found a valley in the land of Shinar and settled there.
3 And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and fire them thoroughly”; so the bricks were to them for stones, and the clay was to them for mortar.
4 And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make ourselves a name, lest we be scattered upon the face of the entire earth.”
5 And the Lord descended to see the city and the tower that the sons of man had built.
6 And the Lord said, “Lo! [they are] one people, and they all have one language, and this is what they have commenced to do. Now, will it not be withheld from them, all that they have planned to do?
7 Come, let us descend and confuse their language, so that one will not understand the language of his companion.”
8 And the Lord scattered them from there upon the face of the entire earth, and they ceased building the city.
9 Therefore, He named it Babel, for there the Lord confused the language of the entire earth, and from there the Lord scattered them upon the face of the entire earth.
10 These are the generations of Shem: Shem was one hundred years old, and he begot Arpachshad, two years after the Flood.
11 And Shem lived after he had begotten Arpachshad five hundred years, and he begot sons and daughters.
12 And Arpachshad lived thirty five years, and he begot Shelah.
13 And Arpachshad lived after he had begotten Shelah four hundred and three years, and he begot sons and daughters.
14 And Shelah lived thirty years, and he begot Eber.
15 And Shelah lived after he had begotten Eber, four hundred and three years, and he begot sons and daughters.
16 And Eber lived thirty four years, and he begot Peleg.
17 And Eber lived after he had begotten Peleg, four hundred and thirty years, and he begot sons and daughters.
18 And Peleg lived thirty years, and he begot Reu.
19 And Peleg lived after he had begotten Reu, two hundred and nine years, and he begot sons and daughters.
20 And Reu lived thirty two years, and he begot Serug.
21 And Reu lived after he had begotten Serug two hundred and seven years, and he begot sons and daughters.
22 And Serug lived thirty years, and he begot Nahor.
23 And Serug lived after he had begotten Nahor, two hundred years, and he begot sons and daughters.
24 And Nahor lived twenty nine years, and he begot Terah.
25 And Nahor lived after he had begotten Terah one hundred and nineteen years, and he begot sons and daughters.
26 And Terah lived seventy years, and he begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
27 And these are the generations of Terah: Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran, and Haran begot Lot.
28 And Haran died during the lifetime of Terah his father in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldees.
29 And Abram and Nahor took themselves wives; the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and the father of Iscah.
30 And Sarai was barren; she had no child.
31 And Terah took Abram his son and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter in law, the wife of Abram his son, and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees to go to the land of Canaan, and they came as far as Haran and settled there.
32 And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years, and Terah died in Haran.

Bible reading in the form of Scripture in pictures can have a profound impact on those who may have never read a chapter in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). Viewing pivotal verses in a visual context can deepen one’s understanding of the text and provide a unique perspective. The images may help to illustrate important themes and messages that may not have been as easily grasped through standard reading. Additionally, this method can be particularly beneficial for those who struggle with traditional reading methods or for those who are more visually inclined. The power of visual storytelling has been utilized for centuries, and when paired with the timeless words of Scripture, it has the potential to bring new life and meaning to the ancient text. Ultimately, whatever method one chooses to engage with the Bible, the most important thing is to seek a deeper understanding of God’s word, and to apply it to our lives in a meaningful way.
