Chapter 23

Ezekiel Chapter 23 Another Approach in Exposing Sin in Other Shape and Form

This Chapter May Not Be Easy To Understand If Reading The Hebrew Scripture Is Not Part Of Your Daily Living

Ezekiel is once again told by G-d to speak about a recollection of events and its current and future standings.

All these are brought about by not taking heed to G-d’s commandment.

Man-made commandment is the root of it — new teachings, new gods, new doctrines, new worships & etc.

“Two Sisters — A Parable”

“Son of Man: There were two women, who were daughters of one mother. They indulged in promiscuity in Egypt; they were promiscuous in their youth. There their bosoms were pressed and there their virgin breasts were squeezed.
23:2-3
Their names were Oholah, the older one, and Oholibah, her sister. They became Mine and bore sons and daughters. As for their [true] names: Samaria is Oholah and Jerusalem is Oholibah.
:4
“Now Oholah was adulterous under Me, for she lusted for her paramours, for neighboring Assyria,
:5
Therefore, I delivered her into the hand of her paramours, into the hands of Assyria’s sons for whom she lusted.
:9
“Now her sister Oholibah observed and was even more corrupt in her lusting than she, and in her adulteries more than her sister’s adulteries.
:11
she lusted for them because of what her eyes had seen, sending emissaries to them, to Chaldea;
:16
She revealed her harlotries, and she revealed her nakedness — so My soul became repulsed from her as My soul had become repulsed from her sister.
:18
Therefore, O Oholibah, thus said the Lord Hashem/Elohim: Behold, I am inciting your paramours against you, those from whom your soul has become repulsed, and I will bring them against you from round about —
:22
I will set My jealousy against you, and they will act upon you with fury — …
:25
They will act toward you with hatred and take away all your toil, leaving you naked and bare, so that the shame of your adulteries, your licentiousness and your promiscuity will be uncovered.
:29
These things will be done to you because of your straying after the nations, because you became defiled with their idols.
:30
… for I have spoken — the word of the Lord Hashem/Elohim.
:34
Therefore, thus said the Lord Hashem/Elohim: Because you have forgotten Me and cast Me behind your back, therefore you too will bear your licentiousness and your promiscuity.”
:35
For they have committed adultery and there is blood on their hands and they have committed adultery with their idols; and even their children, whom they had borne for Me, they passed before them to be consumed.
:37
Moreover, they have done this to Me: They defiled My Sanctuary on that day, and they desecrated My Sabbaths,
:38
When they slaughtered their children for their idols they would come to My Sanctuary on that very day to defile it! Behold, they have done this in My Temple!
:39
[People] came to her as one comes to a harlot; so they came to Oholah and to Oholibah, the women of licentiousness.
:44
For thus said the Lord Hashem/Elohim: I will bring up an assemblage against them and make them into a horror and into plunder.
:46
They will place your licentiousness upon you and you will bear the sins of your idols; then you will know that I am the Lord Hashem/Elohim.”
:49

1 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying:
2 “Son of man, there were two women; the daughters of one mother were they.
3 And they played the harlot in Egypt; in their youth they played the harlot. There their bosoms were pressed, and there they squeezed their virgin breasts.
4 And their names were Oholah the elder, and Oholibah her sister, and they were Mine, and they bore sons and daughters, and their names-Samaria is Oholah, and Jerusalem, Oholibah.
5 Then Oholah played the harlot under Me, and she lusted for her lovers, for the Assyrians, who were nearby.
6 Attired in blue, governors and officers, all of them handsome youths, horsemen, riding on horses.
7 And she bestowed her harlotries upon them, the choice of the sons of Assyria, all of them; and in all that she lusted, she was defiled with all their idols.
8 And her harlotries from Egypt she did not abandon, for they had lain with her in her youth, and they had squeezed her virgin breasts and poured out their harlotry upon her.
9 Therefore, I delivered her into the hands of her lovers, into the hands of the sons of Assyria, for whom she lusted.
10 They uncovered her nakedness; they took her sons and daughters, and they slew her with the sword, and she became a name for the women, and they executed judgments upon her.
11 And her sister Oholibah saw, and she became more corrupt than she [Oholah], and in her harlotries more than the harlotries of her sister.
12 For the sons of Assyria she lusted, the governors and officers nearby, attired in all sorts of finery; horsemen riding horses, handsome youths all of them.
13 And I saw that she had been defiled; they both had one way.
14 And she increased her harlotries, and she saw men engraved on the wall, images of Chaldeans, engraved with types of drawings.
15 Girded with girdles on their loins, colored hanging turbans on their heads; the appearance of mighty men all of them, the likeness of the children of Babylon-Chaldeans-of the land of their birth.
16 And she lusted for them at the sight [that reached] her eyes, and she sent messengers to them, to [the land of] the Chaldeans.
17 And the children of Babylon came to her for a bed of love, and they defiled her with their harlotry, and she became defiled through them, and her soul was disgusted with them.
18 And she revealed her harlotries and uncovered her nakedness, and My soul became disgusted with her, as My soul had become disgusted with her sister.
19 And she increased her harlotries, to remember the days of her youth, when she played the harlot in the land of Egypt.
20 And she lusted for their concubinage, those whose flesh is the flesh of donkeys, and whose issue is the issue of horses.
21 And you remembered the lewdness of your youth, when your breasts were squeezed by Egypt, because of the bosom of your youth.
22 Therefore, Oholibah, so said the Lord God: Behold I am arousing your lovers [to march] against you, those with whom your soul has become disgusted, and I shall bring them upon you from all around.
23 The children of Babylon and all Chaldeans, Pekod, Shoa, and Koa, all the children of Assyria with them, handsome youths, governors and officers all of them, mighty men and summoned ones, all of them horse riders.
24 And they will come upon you [with] weapons, chariots, and wheels, and with an assembly of peoples; an encompassing shield and a buckler, and a helmet they will place upon you all around; and I shall place judgment before them, and they will judge you with their judgments.
25 And I shall put My jealousy against you,and they will deal with you wrathfully; your nose and your ears they will remove, and your survivors will fall by the sword. They will take your sons and daughters, and your residue will be consumed by fire.
26 And they will strip you of your garments, and they will take the vessels of your glory.
27 And I shall abolish your lewdness from you and your harlotry, [which is] from the land of Egypt, and you will not lift your eyes to them, neither will you remember Egypt any longer.
28 For so said the Lord God: Behold I am giving you into the hand of those you hate, into the hand of those with whom your soul was disgusted.
29 And they will deal with you with hatred, and they will take all your toil and leave you naked and bare, and the nakedness of your harlotries will be revealed, both your lewdness and your harlotries.
30 These will be done to you when you go astray after nations, because you became defiled with their idols.
31 [Because] you went in your sister’s way, I shall put her cup into your hand.
32 So said the Lord God: Your sister’s cup you shall drink, the deep and the wide one. It will be a cause of scorn and derision, too much to bear.
33 With drunkenness and grief you shall be filled; the cup of desolation and bewilderment, the cup of your sister, Samaria.
34 And you shall drink it and drain [it], and its shards you shall scrape, and you shall tear off your breasts, for I have spoken, so says the Lord God.
35 Therefore, so said the Lord God: Since you have forgotten Me and have cast Me behind your back, you too bear your lewdness and your harlotries.
36 Then the Lord said to me; Son of man, will you judge Oholah and Oholibah and tell them their abominations?
37 For they have committed adultery, and blood is on their hands, and with their idols they have committed adultery, and also their children whom they bore to Me, they passed over to them to be devoured.
38 Moreover, this they have done to Me; they defiled My sanctuary on that day, and they profaned My Sabbaths.
39 And when they slaughtered their children to their idols, they would come to My sanctuary on that day, to profane it, and behold, so they did in the midst of My House.
40 And furthermore, that they would send to men who come from afar, to whom an emissary is sent- and behold, they came to the place where you bathed, daubed your eyes, and donned jewelry.
41 And you sit on a stately bed with a table set before it, and My incense and My oil you placed upon it.
42 And the sound of a tranquil multitude was within her, for the sake of men of many people, those dwelling all around, brought from the desert, they placed bracelets on their hands and beautiful crowns on their heads.
43 And I said of the one who had aged [in] adulteries, “Now her harlotries will end,” but she [remained].
44 And he came to her as one comes to a woman who plays the harlot; so did they come to Oholah and to Oholibah, the lewd women.
45 And righteous men-they will judge you [with] the judgment of adulteresses and [with] the judgment of murderesses, for they are adulteresses and blood is on their hands.
46 For so said the Lord God: Let an assembly be brought up on them and let them be submitted to terror and plunder.
47 And an assembly shall pelt them with stone and slash them with their swords; they shall slay their sons and daughters and burn their houses with fire.
48 And I shall abolish lewdness from the land, and all the women shall be chastised, and they will not do like your lewdness.
49 And they shall put your lewdness upon you, and you will bear the sins of your idols, and you will know that I am the Lord God.

Bible reading in the form of Scripture in pictures can have a profound impact on those who may have never read a chapter in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). Viewing pivotal verses in a visual context can deepen one’s understanding of the text and provide a unique perspective. The images may help to illustrate important themes and messages that may not have been as easily grasped through standard reading. Additionally, this method can be particularly beneficial for those who struggle with traditional reading methods or for those who are more visually inclined. The power of visual storytelling has been utilized for centuries, and when paired with the timeless words of Scripture, it has the potential to bring new life and meaning to the ancient text. Ultimately, whatever method one chooses to engage with the Bible, the most important thing is to seek a deeper understanding of God’s word, and to apply it to our lives in a meaningful way.
