“Holy Versus Profane”
The word of Hashem came to me, saying, Now you, Son of Man, won’t you rebuke? Won’t you rebuke the city of bloodshed, and inform her of all her abominations?
22:1-2
Say: Thus said the Lord Hashem/Elohim: O city that sheds blood in her midst, hastening her time [of judgment], that fashioned idols within herself for contamination:
22:3
Through the blood that you shed have you become guilty, and through your idols that you fashioned you have become contaminated; [thus] you brought your [judgment] days near and reached the limit of your years. Therefore, I have made you a shame to the nations, and a disgrace for all the lands.
:4
My sanctities have you scorned and My Sabbaths have you desecrated.
:8
… they partook [of idolatrous sacrifices] upon the mountains with you; …
:9
… You have forgotten Me — the word of the Lord Hashem/Elohim.
:12
… I am Hashem; I have spoken and I shall carry it out.
:14
I will scatter you among the nations and disperse you among the lands; and I will eliminate your contamination from you.
:15
… then you will know that I am Hashem.”
:16
I will gather you and fan the fire of My fury upon you, and you will be melted down within it.
:21
Her priests robbed My Torah and desecrated My sanctities; they did not distinguish between holy and profane, and they did not make known the difference between contamination and purified; they hid their eyes from My Sabbaths, and I became profaned among you.
:26
And her prophets smeared plaster for them, for they say, ‘Thus said the Lord Hashem/Elohim.’ when Hashem did not speak.
:28
“The people of the land have perpetrated oppression and robbed loot; they have wronged the poor and the needy and oppressed the stranger without justice.
:29
From among them I sought a man who could build a fence and stand in the breach before Me, … but I did not find [anyone].
:30
… I have placed [the consequences of] their [evil] way upon their head — the word of the Lord Hashem/Elohim.”
:31
1 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying:
2 “And you, son of man, will you judge, will you judge the city of bloodshed and let her know all her abominations?
3 Then you shall say; So said the Lord God: O city that sheds blood in her midst, even now, when her time is approaching, and makes idols over her to defile herself.
4 By the blood that you have shed you have become laden with guilt, and by your idols that you have made you have become defiled; and you have made your days draw near, and you have come up to your years; therefore have I made you an object of shame to the nations and [a subject of] gossip to all the lands.
5 Those that are near and those that are far from you will gossip about you-you-whose name is so befouled, in whom the turmoil is so great.
6 Behold, the princes of Israel were in you, each one by his own arm in order to shed blood.
7 Father and mother are held light in you; they have dealt against the stranger with oppression in your midst; orphan and widow have they wronged in you.
8 My holy things have you despised, and My Sabbaths have you profaned.
9 Talebearers have been in you in order to shed blood, and in you they have eaten upon the mountains; in your midst they have held wicked plans.
10 Their fathers’ nakedness they uncovered in you; they have afflicted the woman in her unclean period.
11 In you one man committed an abomination with his neighbor’s wife; another incestuously defiled his daughter-in-law, and another afflicted his sister, the daughter of his father.
12 In you they have taken bribes to shed blood; usury and increased pay have you taken, and enriched your neighbors with dishonest gain-and Me you have forgotten, says the Lord God.
13 And behold, I clapped My hands together over your dishonest gain which you have made and over your blood-guilt that is in you.
14 Will your heart endure, or will your hands remain strong in the days that I will deal with you? I, the Lord, have spoken, and I shall perform.
15 I will scatter you among the nations and fling you out into the lands and I will make your impurity completely disappear out of you.
16 And you shall be profaned within yourself before the eyes of the nations, and you shall know that I am the Lord.”
17 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying:
18 “Son of man! The house of Israel has become dross to Me; all of them are copper and tin and iron and lead in the midst of a furnace; dross of silver have they become.
19 Therefore, so said the Lord God: Because you have all become dross, therefore behold, I gather you together into the midst of Jerusalem.
20 As they gather silver, copper, iron, lead, and tin into the midst of a furnace to blow fire upon it, to melt it, so shall I gather with My wrath and with My fury, and I shall cast you in and melt you.
21 And I shall gather you, and I shall blow upon you with the fire of My anger, and you will be melted in its midst.
22 As silver is melted in the midst of a furnace, so will you be melted in its midst, and you shall know that I, the Lord, have poured out My fury upon you.”
23 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying:
24 “Son of man, say to her: You are a land that is not cleansed; it was not rained upon on the day of fury.
25 There is a conspiracy of her prophets in her midst; like a roaring lion, tearing prey; they devoured souls, riches and honor they take, they increase her widows in her midst.
26 Her priests robbed My Torah and profaned My holy things; they did not distinguish between holy and profane, neither did they let them know [the difference] between unclean and clean, and they hid their eyes from My Sabbaths, and I was profaned in their midst.
27 Her princes in her midst are like wolves tearing prey, to shed blood, to destroy souls, for the sake of dishonest gain.
28 And her prophets plastered for them with daub, prophesy futility, and divine for them falsehoods. They say, ‘So said the Lord God,’ but the Lord did not speak.
29 The people of the land have practiced oppression and committed robbery; they wronged the poor and the needy, and oppressed the stranger for lack of judgment.
30 And I sought of them a man who puts up a wall and stands in the breach before Me, for the sake of the land that it not be destroyed, but I did not find.
31 And I poured out My fury upon them; with the fire of My wrath I destroyed them. I put their way on their head,” said the Lord God.
