Devarim in Hebrew
The book of Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Hebrew Bible, and it contains a farewell address given by Moses to the Israelites just prior to their entry into the Promised Land. The book is divided into three parts:
An introduction reviewing Israel’s history,
A restatement of the law, and
A series of blessings and curses.
In the introduction, Moses reminds the people of God’s past faithfulness to them and warns them not to forget his commands.
In the restatement of the law, Moses reiterates the Ten Commandments and other laws given by God and instructs the Israelites to obey them carefully.
Finally, in the blessings and curses, Moses lays out the rewards for obedience and the consequences of disobedience. Overall, the book serves both as a reminder of God’s covenant with Israel and as a call to faithful obedience to him.
