THE PROPHETS
I SAMUEL
SHMUEL I
The Books of I and II Samuel, also known as the Books of Samuel (originally one book), recount the life and times of the prophet Samuel, the establishment of the Israelite monarchy, and the reigns of the first two kings of Israel, Saul and David. They provide insights into the political, religious, and social aspects of ancient Israel during that period. Samuel (Shmuel in Hebrew) anointed both Saul and David as kings of Israel with the approval of G-d and at His command.
Samuel is the greatest of all the judges, and a prophet who was of the same stature of Moses and Aaron.
The most coverage of this book in its context is centered in the life of David. Known as man of faith, unselfish leader, great warrior, loyal friend, compassionate in victory, humble in defeat, and model of repentance.
Chapter 31
I Samuel Chapter 31 Accounts the Tragic End of Israel’s First King
Suicide?
Saul as king of Israel has the duty of protecting G-d’s holiness.
Hence, to avoid desecration of G-d’s Name opted to draw his sword to himself. In such a way, the enemy will not have a chance to mock the G-d of Israel by torturing him.
What about you?
You profess to be godly or holy, yet how you live your life desecrates the Name of your G-d?
*If the G-d you worship is man-made (Jesus, Trinity, Triune or 3-in-1 G-d), then you may continue; for it does not do any harm.
“The Tragic Deaths of Saul and His Sons”
The Philistines were battling with Israel, and the men of Israel ran off from before the Philistines and fell slain upon Mount Gilboa.
31:1
Saul said to the armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and stab me with it, lest these uncircumcised people come and stab me and make sport of me.” But his armor-bearer did not consent, for he was very frightened, so Saul took the sword himself and fell upon it.
:4
So Saul and his three sons and his armor-bearer, as well as all of his men, died together on that day.
:6
The inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard about him — about what the Philistines had done to Saul —
:11
They then took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree in Jabesh, and they fasted seven days.
:13
1 And the Philistines fought with Israel, and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and the slain fell on Mt. Gilboa.
2 And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines slew Jonathan and Abinadab, and Malchishua, Saul’s sons.
3 And the battle fell heavy upon Saul, and the archers found him, and he was very much frightened of the archers.
4 And Saul said to his weapon-bearer, “Draw your sword and run me through with it, lest these uncircumcised men come and run me through and mock me.” But his weapon-bearer was unwilling, for he was very much afraid. And Saul took the sword and fell upon it.
5 And his weapon-bearer saw that Saul had died, and he also fell upon his sword and died with him.
6 And Saul and his three sons and his weapon-bearer died. Also, all his men died together on that day.
7 And the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley, and who were on the other side of the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his three sons had died; and they left the cities and fled, and the Philistines came and occupied them.
8 And it was on the morrow, that the Philistines came to strip the slain, and they found Saul and his sons lying on Mt. Gilboa.
9 And they severed his head and stripped his armor; and they sent them around in the land of the Philistines, to spread the tidings to the house of their idols and to the people.
10 And they put his armor in the house of Ashtaroth, and they impaled his body on the wall of Beth-shan.
11 And the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead heard about him, that which the Philistines had done to Saul.
12 And all the brave men rose and went all night and took Saul’s body and his sons’ bodies from the wall of Beth-shan, and they came to Jabesh and burned (for) them there.
13 And they took their bones and buried them under the tree in Jabesh, and they fasted seven days.
