I Samuel Chapter 28

THE PROPHETS

I SAMUEL

SHMUEL I

The Books of I and II Samuel, also known as the Books of Samuel (originally one book), recount the life and times of the prophet Samuel, the establishment of the Israelite monarchy, and the reigns of the first two kings of Israel, Saul and David. They provide insights into the political, religious, and social aspects of ancient Israel during that period. Samuel (Shmuel in Hebrew) anointed both Saul and David as kings of Israel with the approval of G-d and at His command.

Samuel is the greatest of all the judges, and a prophet who was of the same stature of Moses and Aaron.

The most coverage of this book in its context is centered in the life of David. Known as man of faith, unselfish leader, great warrior, loyal friend, compassionate in victory, humble in defeat, and model of repentance.

Chapter 28

28th Chapter of I Samuel on Raising to Speak to the Dead

Do You Go To Fortune Teller Or Anything Similar?

You should stop! For that is against the commandments of G-d.

*But if you are a Christian, you may? For the Greek book – New Testament teaches to do what G-d told not to do!

The books of Romans, Galatians and Hebrews as very good references to disobedience against G-d’s teachings.

“A Necro-mancer is Sought by Saul”

It happened in those days that the Philistines mobilized their camps to the army, to fight against Israel, and Achish said to David, “Know that you will go forth with me to the camp – you and your men.”
28:1
Saul inquired of Hashem, but Hashem did not answer him; neither in a dream, nor through the Urim [VeTumim], nor through the prophets.
:6
So Saul said to his servants. “Seek out a woman who practices necromancy, and I will go to her and inquire through her.” …
:7
The woman asked, “Whom shall I raise up for you?” And he said, “Raise up Samuel for me.”
:11
Samuel said to Saul, “Why did you disturb me, to raise me up?” Saul replied, “I am in great distress, and the Philistines are at war against me; God has turned away from me and does not answer me anymore, neither through the hand of the prophets nor in dreams — so I called upon you to inform me what I should do.”
:15
Samuel then said, “But why do you ask me, since Hashem has turned away from you and has become your adversary.
:16
and Hashem has done for Himself that which He spoke through me, for Hashem has torn the kingship from your hand and given it to your fellow, to David?
:17
Because you did not obey the word of Hashem and did not carry out His wrath against Amalek, therefore Hashem has done this thing to you this day.
:18
And Hashem will deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines; tomorrow you and your sons will be with me, and also the Israelite camp will Hashem deliver into the hand of the Philistines.”
:19

1 And it was in those days that the Philistines gathered their camps together for warfare, to make a war upon Israel. And Achish said to David, “You shall know that you shall go out with me in the camp, you and your men.”
2 And David said to Achish, “Therefore, you shall know what your servant will do.” And Achish said to David, “Therefore, I shall make you my bodyguard all the time.”
3 Now Samuel had died, and all Israel lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, and (each one lamented him) in his own city. Now, Saul had abolished necromancers and those who divine with the Jidoa bone from the land.
4 And the Philistines gathered, and came and encamped in Shunem. And Saul gathered all Israel, and they encamped in Gilboa.
5 And Saul saw the camp of the Philistines. And he feared, and his heart trembled greatly.
6 And Saul inquired of the Lord, and the Lord did not answer; neither by dreams, nor by the Urim, nor by the prophets.
7 And Saul said to his servants, “Seek for me a necromanceress; and I shall go to her, and inquire of her.” And his servants said, “Behold, there is a necromanceress in En-dor.”
8 And Saul disguised himself, and donned other garments. And he went, he and two men with him. And they came to the woman by night, and he said, “Divine now for me with necromancy, and conjure up for me whom I shall tell you.”
9 And the woman said to him, “Behold, you know what Saul has done, that he has abolished the necromancers and those who divine by the Jidoa bone, from the land; and why do you lay a snare for my life to cause me to die?”
10 And Saul swore to her by the Lord, saying, “As the Lord lives, no punishment will happen to you for this thing.”
11 And the woman said, “Whom shall I conjure up for you?” And he said, “Conjure up Samuel for me.”
12 And the woman saw Samuel, and she cried aloud. And the woman said to Saul, saying, “Why have you deceived me? for you are Saul!”
13 And the king said to her, “Fear not, for what have you seen?” And the woman said to Saul, “I have seen angels ascending from the earth.”
14 And he said to her, “What is his form?” And she said, “An old man is coming up, and he is wrapped in a cloak.” And Saul knew that he was Samuel; and he bowed down with his face to the ground, and prostrated himself.
15 And Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you roused me, to bring me up?” And Saul said, “I am greatly distressed, and the Philistines are battling against me, and God has turned away from me, and has not answered me anymore, neither through the prophets, nor through dreams. And I have called you to let me know what I shall do.”
16 And Samuel said, “And why do you ask me, when the Lord has turned away from you, and has become (the supporter of) your adversary?
17 And the Lord has done to him as He spoke by me; and the Lord has torn the kingdom from your hand, and has given it to your fellow-to David.
18 Because you did not listen to the Lord’s voice, and you did not execute the fierceness of His wrath against Amalek; therefore, the Lord has done this thing to you this day.
19 And the Lord will also deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines; and tomorrow, you and your sons will be with me. Also, the Lord will deliver the camp of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.”
20 And Saul hastened and fell his full length to the ground; and he was very frightened because of Samuel’s words. Furthermore, he had no strength, for he had not eaten bread all that day and all that night.
21 And the woman came to Saul, and saw that he was very much terror-stricken. And she said to him, “Behold, your handmaid listened to your voice; and I have put my life in my hand, and obeyed your words which you spoke to me.
22 And now, I pray you, you also listen to the voice of your handmaid, and let me place before you a morsel of bread and eat; and you will have strength when you go on the way.”
23 And he refused, and said, “I shall not eat.” And his servants and also the woman urged him: and he listened to their voice. And he arose from the ground and sat upon the couch.
24 And the woman had a fatted calf in the house; and she hastened and slaughtered it. And she took flour and kneaded it and baked from it unleavened cakes.
25 And she set it before Saul and before his servants, and they ate. And they rose and went away on that night.

Bible reading in the form of Scripture in pictures can have a profound impact on those who may have never read a chapter in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). Viewing pivotal verses in a visual context can deepen one’s understanding of the text and provide a unique perspective. The images may help to illustrate important themes and messages that may not have been as easily grasped through standard reading. Additionally, this method can be particularly beneficial for those who struggle with traditional reading methods or for those who are more visually inclined. The power of visual storytelling has been utilized for centuries, and when paired with the timeless words of Scripture, it has the potential to bring new life and meaning to the ancient text. Ultimately, whatever method one chooses to engage with the Bible, the most important thing is to seek a deeper understanding of God’s word, and to apply it to our lives in a meaningful way.
